Some Tips When Analysing Language
Use
the following sentence as a guide when analysing any language.
Note: The following scaffolds have been tailored slightly to the analysis of emotive language.
The
author uses the
emotive word (identify emotive word) to
describe (what is the word describing).

be encouraged to(How does this make the reader feel
about what is being described).

emotive words ‘terrifying’ and ‘dangerous’ to describe the home country of the
asylum seekers

the ‘conditions’ and ‘circumstances’
of the home country the refugees are fleeing from. Former asylum seekers and
families would be encouraged to reflect on the dangers they fled from in their own lives and the importance
being protected by Australia played in their own happiness.

The authors
description of the asylum seekers home country as terrifying and dangerous
emphasizes that refugees are vulnerable and require a safe country and adequate
government policy to protect them from a ‘state of horror.’
